Project Overview
NVIDIA, a global leader in AI computing and data center solutions, required a buildout of a dedicated data hall within a data center facility in Reno, Nevada. The project involved collaboration with multiple stakeholders and adherence to strict requirements. To ensure efficiency and high-quality standards throughout the process, the work was divided into three key phases—Planning, Installation, and Configuration.
Layline's Role
Layline Automation played a critical role in the successful execution of this project by providing infrastructure planning, installing over 1,000 network, compute, and storage devices, and deploying 11,500 network and power cables. Additionally, Layline performed operational and testing support tasks to validate proper installations. Beyond technical execution, Layline took on Project Management responsibilities, ensuring effective tracking of project status, delivery of daily progress reports, and timely communication of issues and blockers. Layline also managed inventory and organized the delivery team to meet all stakeholder requirements.
Challenges
Coordinating multiple stakeholders, including key strategic partner World Wide Technology, as well as NVIDIA sponsors and project managers, posed a significant challenge. Managing access to inventory, adhering to strict scheduling constraints, and following a detailed Method of Procedure (MOP) for phased network turn-up by offsite Network Engineers required careful oversight. On-site device configuration and testing support were essential in assisting remote engineering staff. Additionally, ensuring high-quality installation that met strict cabling standards—including proper labeling and dressing—was a key focus. Tracking a large volume of equipment installations across various deployment phases while maintaining high-quality standards under tight timelines added further complexity to the project.
Solution
To meet the aggressive project timeline, Layline implemented an optimized technician scheduling strategy, deploying multiple shifts per day to maintain continuous progress. A phased deployment approach was used to ensure quality control and adherence to installation standards. The first row of equipment was installed and reviewed to validate compliance with client-approved cabling and setup guidelines. Once approved, the remaining deployments were systematically scheduled by device type and row, ensuring efficient workflows and preventing bottlenecks. Comprehensive project tracking was a key component of Layline’s approach, with daily coordination between project managers and lead technicians to log completed tasks and provide stakeholders with real-time progress updates. Detailed reporting enabled precise completion estimates, reinforcing client and partner confidence throughout the deployment process. Through proactive coordination and structured execution, Layline ensured a high-quality buildout of NVIDIA’s dedicated data hall within the existing data center environment.
