Data Hall Migration

Project

Data Hall Migration

Client

NVIDIA

Location

Austin, TX and Santa Clara, California

Project Overview

NVIDIA, a global leader in AI computing and data center solutions, sought to transition from a lab-focused data center to a professionally managed private data hall. This multi-year initiative involved building out two private data halls within the same data center facility in phased deployments. The goal was to support growing operational demands while ensuring a high-availability, managed environment. Once the second data hall was completed, a coordinated migration of devices from the lab environment was executed to consolidate NVIDIA’s infrastructure within the newly built private data halls.

Layline's Role

Layline Automation was responsible for executing the infrastructure buildout and migration, encompassing the installation and relocation of nearly 4,000 network, compute, and storage devices. The team built out the two private data halls at different times as part of the phased deployment. Across both halls, Layline installed 1,600 new networking devices, including switches, firewalls, and routers, as well as inter-rack and intra-rack direct and structured cabling with copper and fiber optic connections, dressing, and labeling. Once the second data hall was completed, Layline coordinated the migration of 1,700 network and compute devices from the lab environment to the newly constructed private data halls. Additionally, the team handled the installation and configuration of Power Distribution Units (PDUs), ensuring proper power cabling and network integration for optimized performance.

Challenges

Executing a large-scale migration and infrastructure build within a single data center facility presented unique challenges. Phasing the construction of two private data halls required careful planning to align timelines and resources while ensuring minimal disruption to ongoing operations. Coordinating the migration of thousands of network and compute devices required precise scheduling to minimize downtime and maintain service continuity. Ensuring compliance with structured cabling standards and integrating PDUs without disrupting existing operations added further complexity.

Solution

Layline implemented a structured, phased deployment approach to ensure seamless execution. Dedicated project managers oversaw each phase of the buildout and migration, coordinating logistics and installations with technical teams. A detailed tracking and reporting system was leveraged to monitor installation progress, manage inventory, and ensure quality control. The team followed best practices for structured cabling and labeling to optimize future manageability. Additionally, Layline’s data center technicians provided expert configuration of network and power settings, ensuring that all devices were operationally ready post-installation. By maintaining a methodical execution strategy, Layline successfully completed NVIDIA’s private data hall migration and infrastructure buildout with minimal disruption, delivering a professionally managed, high-availability data center environment for their expanding operations.
